Recently, in July we believe, Singha (that’s the beer, not the lion) teamed up with Lonely Planet and ran a contest that invited people from around the world to vote for the best bar. Like ever.
The winning bar turned out to be a little nondescript player called De Witte Aap in Rotterdam.
De Witte Aap is neither excitedly avant-garde nor achingly cool; given that, it seems to be one of those cosy (speak to any Dutch person and I’m sure they’ll use cosy to describe almost anything) bars where you just have to be there to experience how great it is. They organise a different visual arts exhibition every month, and the bar acts as a gallery space for creative artists. Back to the list of selected bars from the contest, our personal top pick is a quirky cafe not far from our shores. Palate Palatte in KL boasts of a symphony of mismatched furniture, it’s beautiful. When seemingly opposing pieces come together in harmony, we simply go weak in the knees.
